Republican National Convention Bridge
Madison Square Garden, Pennsylvania Plaza, New York, NY, USA
In 2004, the Republican National Convention was held at Madison Square Garden in NYC. In order to accommodate the media and all those taking part in the Convention, UBS installed a temporary pedestrian bridge seventeen feet above Eighth Avenue at West 33rd Street to connect Madison Square Garden to the James A. Farley Post Office, providing easy passage from the media center to the arena.
The bridge measured 20’ wide by 110’ long and weighed 30 tons. UBS was responsible for installing, transporting, rigging, and ultimately dismantling and removing the media bridge, which involved working closely with NYC DOT on lane and street closures. The bridge was transported in sections and loaded onto three flatbed trucks then lifted into place during off peak hours. The bridge was installed ahead of schedule on July 3rd and remained in place until completion of the Convention in early September 2004.
